07.May.2009 New Level of Respect
I’ve been DJing with my computer and a midi controller for a couple months now and I’ve been thinking about the next level, moving to turntables. Mixing with tables is a whole new level of difficult, considering I’ve been using a program that does the hard part of beat matching for you. But what does being good with turntables look like? Sure, with some practice I could mix one song to the other like I do already, but there is so much more to it.
That would be scratching, the reason for this post. Scratch DJing is something that is completely beyond me, people using samples and making COMPLETELY different music out of them on the fly with two turntables is really amazing shit. Something that since becoming a DJ I’ve gained a new level of respect for.
This brings me to A-Trak who is probably the most famous DJ in the world right now. He is Kanye’s personal DJ, has a highly anticipated album out, and can scratch like no-fucking-other. Watch this video of him in Sweden then go on Youtube and see some of his other freestyle stuff.
If one day I could scratch even a little bit and make someone go “Oh damn!” I would die a happy man, but until then I’ll just cream my jeans over this:
